Water conditions were excellent early in the morning so I decided to make my way out to the Rock Pile (7.5 miles NNE of Port Angeles). Several boats were already there when I arrived at 6:00AM. The drift was east to west and very manageable. On my second drift, I thought I'd hung on the bottom, but then the "bottom" took off. After about 15 minutes, I harpooned a very nice fish. It turned out to be a 72 pounder.
I was using a spreader bar, 24 oz sinker, 9/0-10/0 double hook rig and a herring doused in Mike's UV Herring scent and a pink salmon hoochie above the hooks.
If the weather cooperates, give the Rock Pile a try. If not, try Freshwater Bay (a 177 pounder was caught there), or off Ediz Hook.
Good Luck - Tight lines!
