Put 3 traps in at 11:30. Went back at 5:30. I'm pretty sure some pathetic piece of shut pilfered in 2 of my traps as there were only a couple of very large females. The third had 1 jumbo male dungeness and 2 large reds. I baby sat my pots the other day and after 2 hours there was 12-15 large crab in each pot. And I did not mention on my last report about the boat I seen right by my boy while I was trolling. I gunned it toward my boy and the boat split off toward the launch then stopped and 1 person acted like they were fishing. I pulled the pot and relocated it and proceed to troll ( baby sit ) to get the six legal keepers. I just don't understand I guess.

Why waste time and money setting traps when they can steal yours for free?I'm glad you were rewarded with at least 1 decent crab for your labors.
I would have waited until they pulled your trap and confronted them.

What kind of boat is it? When I was out on Labor Day I saw a 25-26 Searay cabin cruiser acting sketchy around Gold Beach, I was watching him from a distance and it looked like he was pulling my pot from a few hundred yards away, so I went full speed right for him and he was right at my pot, I jumped the gun a bit. I had no case so I just did a circle around his boat and mean mugged him. He had a boat full of thug looking guys, I had wife and 4 year old girl, and yes we could have taken them, I should have my girl throw Barbie at his boat.

I used to let my traps soak for a while but now I just pull my traps every 20 minutes or so, if there's crab in the area, and the bait you are using is stinky enough, then I find letting them sit for super long doesn't add that many more crab. At least that way you know nobody's stealing your crab, and you'll know if a spot is producing or not and if you need to move the trap around. Salmon carcasses and catfish heads seemed to work best for me when pulling up the traps quickly. Chicken seemed to take a little longer to permeate through the water. Hope you catch lots! I been burned by people stealing my crab too. Good luck

It was a 16 ft. Tin boat. Looked like a light blue smokercraft, with 3 thuggy types. I do use salmon carcasses ,and I like how they work. Yes I am very pleased to not have my whole set up stolen. Thanks.

Ideally I like to do an hour soak, but now with kids it just does not work that way, sometimes I only have time to do two pulls a day. One of my anti theft tricks is to weight my pot heavily that if you don't have a pot puller you are not getting my pot off the bottom, if the thief has a pot puller I guess its fair game, if they need to eat that bad they probably should have my crab.

I love the idea. I do have a 3.5 h.p. Briggs with a gear reduction on it. I need to buy a capstan and weld up a stainless davit. But after that is done I think 20 pounds in my pot ought to do it. Thanks for the idea and best luck

Better idea, just catch so many crab it's impossible to pull up without a motor. Easy enough right? :p
