Launched off Redondo while still dark. Water was like glass so trolling was easy to navigate. Noticed half as many boats as last Saturday, and they thinned out throughout the morning as it became obvious the fish were few and far between. Trolling alone in my old 15' Glasspar varying down rigger depths between 50' and 80', I tried hoochies with herring strips behind a UV glow dodger on one side, and Green label cut plug herring with Blue dye behind a Hotspot Red/Chartruse triangle flasher on the other side of the boat.
By 11AM, I was among a few die-hards left on the water, and having mentally conceded defeat, I started pulling up my gear when, bam, pulled in a nice 3 lb Coho which hit the cut plug herring. Fishing trip saved! Took it home to my wife who cooked it to perfection on the grill. Farewell Summer!
