Area 4 and 5 September 19 and 20, 2014
I made the 4 hour drive to Sekiu, WA on the shores of the Straits of Juan De Fuca Thursday September, 18th. I was to late to fish in the afternoon so the plan was to get to the boat at 6-6:15am. It was after 6:30 when we started out.
I think we went north before we put out our gear. At first I could barely get the gear in the water before I had a hit. My first fish I let go trying to get something bigger but they weren’t. When the bite died we traveled west into Area 4. This is the first year that we could go there to catch salmon. We were hoping for a little bit bigger fish. Which happened. In Area 5 I was using Coho Mojo with a Hot Spot Green Glo Flasher. I switched out a couple of times. In area 4 I was using a Q-Cove Flasher in a Crush series, with a new Wannafish A Lure...Red Necklace. Blending my kokanee fishing in, it is a beaded lure.
I caught fish on it both days. When we got the boat limit of 8 Coho we went to catch Lingcod.
Glen has promised me that we could go where I could keep one. I had tied up seven new jigs...and forgot to bring them. I first used my 2oz marabou jig that I have used in the past and attracts lings. The first ling I caught was undersized. Then I got a nice sized Kelp Greenling. Didn’t get anything for awhile so I switched it out to another that was 1oz black and white marabou and put a plastic root beer colored twin tail on it. Looked pretty good to me. In the mean time Glen is up on the fish box. He has been using a Kelp Greenling for bait to lure up a ling. Which he was. He was shouting orders “get the camera-get the net”. No one on that side of the boat could fish waiting for him to bring this “BIG” ling up to be netted while it was clinging to the greenling. We tried to video it but it could not capture the theatrics of Glen and with these lings.
I kept jigging while Glen was playing with the lings when I got a keeper! But I had to sling it over the gunnels of the boat because the net was waiting for this “BIG” ling Glen was so excited about. My fish made it in after hitting the side. As for that “BIG” ling of Glen’s, it was!
We had lost the place where the lings were so Glen headed us back. I think it was about 10:30am so went in and got finished cleaning all the fish: Salmon, Lingcod, Black Rockfish, Kelp Greenling.
