Area 2 Westport WA 8-5-14

There is always excitement before going fishing. But when you have to plan and make sure you have everything you need, and it is out of the ordinary fishing areas, it is even more exciting. At least it is for me. I was going to Westport. Boarding the F24 Xperience. Isn’t that the name of Glen and Cami’s boat? Or maybe when you board the boat you get the F24 XPERIENCE?

This is the 3rd time this year that I have been fishing for salmon with them. Although I have to say that I was worried. I went out twice in Area 11 and got one limit plus stealing a nice returning king from a seal. I didn’t want to end my streak.

I got there at 4:30am to find that they weren’t ready. Glen said that the wind kicked up a bit and he wanted it to be light to get through the crab pots. So I gave them my stuff to put in the boat. We launched without much ado.
Since yesterday they went out a ways only to come back in shallower. The plan was to do the reverse with me on board. I think we stopped at about 30 feet deep and trolled out to around 40 feet.
There were Jim’s rod and mine on the downriggers and Glen and Cami shared the dipsy diver rod that had cookies and cream spoon with a rotary flasher on in it. I am not sure what it is called.
After a bit of time the dispy diver rod goes off and first king in the boat. Shortly after that it does it again. It was 15 pulls out. It is quiet for awhile then Jim’s rod gets a take down. It took some time to get it in. This was the BIG one! It was exciting.

When Cami, Glen, and then Jim got the big one, I later found out was 28 pounds. I was thinking my streak of getting salmon every trip was going to bust. But bust at Westport was salt in a wound. Ouch.
The bite was not as good as the day before. You know “should have been here yesterday”. I had changed up many times. Jim did too. His was the third king in the boat and he was using a helmeted herring when it was hooked. There was a lull between Glen and Cami's 2 kings and Jim's. I had put on a new bucktail tube fly I made up. I was looking to see what else I had to put on when Glen said “Toni you got a fish”. I got up to take it out of the rod holder as the line comes off the clip and I reel in my king. My streak is unbroken! Now we are looking for cohos. And we only have a few hours to look. Steve and Mike were out there so I was texting to see how we might catch some silvers because they had one. They were asking us how to get kings. It was just what fish were out there I guess. The dipsy diver was shallow and Jim and I got ours around 20 foot down. We troll around for quite awhile and I changed out the fly and I was going to put on a pink splatter that I got at silvers with at Sekiu but then I thought I had better stick with my plan from earlier which was Purple Haze with a new one I tied up I might call purple mist. Shortly after that they called my attention back to my rod as it had a fish on. I have a hatchery coho in the boat! I have a limit!
Around 10:15am Jim says we had better head to get over the bar easy. So we head in.
The pictures I have do not do the fish justice. I can’t show how thick it was.
Awesome day. Awesome fish. I will always remember Jim getting that king. Once it was in and he sat down he turned and said “I am still shaking”. He got the kings crown for the 3 days he fished with Glen and Cami. 2 big fish in 3 days. Thursday morning, August 7, 2014 Cami called me to tell me that Jim passed away.

Thanks for the report. Did I read correctly that your friend Jim passed away? I am so sorry for your loss. It definitely is a shame to hear that. I am glad you were able to share such a great day. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes he passed away. I only saw him when fishing with Glen and Cami or when I was at the Point Defiance boat launch. It was a big shock. He was going to have a heart valve replacement.
