Wow...I think I just set the bar pretty high for myself. Not sure I'll ever repeat this performance.
Went on a bottom fish charter on Saturday with a mens group from my church. Water wasn't bad, 3-5 ft swells, but 5 of our 19 guys got sea sick even with dramamine and they didn't fish. Well on the bright side, that's 50 more sea bass for the rest of us to catch. The bass were plentiful and chunky on Saturday. 5-6 lbs on average. When they would slow down, off to the next spot. On average, we stayed roughly 10 miles from shore in anywhere from 60 to over 100 feet of water.
So I wasn't sure to expect in the way of lings. The guys were telling me that on last years trip, they only boated 4 or 5 lings all day. Well Saturday was a bit better than that...we boated 22 lings. I boated 6 and kept the biggest 2. The big girl is 23 lbs and she was hitch hiking on a sea bass that I was reeling up. I'm reeling, reeling, reeling and all of a sudden my rod doubles over and it's like I'm pulling up a bag of rocks! I knew a ling came and grabbed on, but when she got to the surface I about fell over! That's my first ling...what a way to start! The other 5 were awesome too, and like I said, I kept the next biggest one, which ended up being 12 lbs (still a great fish).
Got home and immediately fried some up and I'm in love. I will definitely be booking another charter before the season is done.
We went on the Sea Angel and I would highly recommend them. Captain Brian and his deck hands Jimmy and Kevin were super professional, great attitudes and they busted their humps for us all day long (give them your tip money at the start of the trip and they may or may not take a bit better care of you vs. the guy who hasn't tipped them yet...LOL).
Great company, great weather and great fish! I'll be back for another trip later this summer.
