After my dismal fishing adventure on Friday I had better hopes of at least getting into something for the derby Saturday so I picked up my fishing partner at 4am in Kent and we were at the Pt Defiance boat launch at 4:30 probably right behind Fish Dawg! lol

We started fishing at Owens beach and ran back and forth and then over to the Clay banks without even a bump! Started out with an Irish cream tailwagger and cop car coho killer but no takers so moved one rod over to a white and pink spotted hootchie with a herring strip and did manage a shark that took my trailer hook! Changed out lures and flashers every half hour or so but still no action and only saw one or 2 fish caught the whole time so after tide change moved over the girl scouts camp and ran into Fish Dawg and the fish princess and was happy to hear she got a fish! yea!

Still no luck for us so finished our day fishing over by quarter harbor master and finally called it quits by noon and headed back to the launch and was once again very impressed by the way they run that boat launch like a well oiled machine with someone directing traffic for all us boaters! The fish checker said it was very slow for most boats with just a boat here and there that did real well so felt a little better about our lack of luck so now comes the interesting part~

If you read my post yesterday you knew that we rescued this poor guy who was stranded half way between Pt. Defiance and Browns point and towed him to safety. Well today was my return I guess for that deed because as I was getting onto highway 16 East back to Seatac, I happened to look into my rear view mirror to see my down rigger dangling down around the wheels of the trailer and swinging back and forth. I quickly pulled off onto the shoulder and was amazed at what had happened~ the bolt that holds the down rigger onto the base must have worked itself free and was gone so the down rigger fell off. Now what kept it from falling off and possibly causing an accident or worse was nothing short of a miracle; the cord from my clip had wrapped around the screws of the base at just the right length so that it just dangled down and did not hit the ground or the wheels or fall off completely! WOW!! Thank you Lord!!

Was too tired to make it back to the awards at 3pm but am curious to see what the results were like but heard it was pretty slow all over. I will be in the Gig Harbor derby next Saturday and not sure if I can repeat my performance from last year when I won the mystery fish prize of $500 for a 7.24 lb king! haha but you never know!

See you on the water!

Wow! Sorry to hear about the lack of fish. You're due!....and the DR! Definitely fortune was on your side on that one. Saw loads of boats trolling by yesterday morning between 5 and 10:30am and didn't see one hookup out in front of us. Looked like it was pretty slow all around. Not as many boats out this afternoon where we were. Good luck next weekend!

Sorry about the dry spell on fish Barry, but glad to hear your downrigger stayed out of harms way when it separated from your boat. Good to see you out there last weekend! Best wishes to catch a monsta for the Gig Harbor event this weekend!!

BTW 62 fish weighed in for the SKC PSA derby...mostly kings with a few silvers and pinks mixed in.

Nice silver lining to dark cloud hanging over you. Hang in there. Thanks for the report.

That could be a lesson for all of us in checking bolts. Thank you for sharing. My friends Cami and Glen from F24 did better than they had since years back when you could keep natives. They got their limits. 4 kings but that put them way down since they weighed only in the teens or less. They were at Owens beach and were done by 8:30am. They worked the downriggers. Always following the contour of the bottom. Therefore they did not set it at a certain depth and troll.

Thanks for that all! Toni that is great advise for me to adhere to for this Saturday. So did they stay close to the bottom is what you are saying?
