Well I didn't fish Saturday since it was the one day for shrimp and figured the water would be like bumper boats. Sunday, well better go fishing since this weather is not going to last forever! Hit the water early and get my bait then move over to ling hole. With one boat already fishing I pull up and right away hook one and bring it in and it only measures 25 inches so back it goes. During the next few hours I hook and lose 6 or 7 lings, getting them about half way up and losing them. Although fun, starting to get frustrated. Several others came and gone to this fishing spot and I did not see any others hooking up lings only rockfish. Most are using jigs that are on the small side for lings atleast in my oppinion. Also, most are using small poles. They would hook a rockfish(small) and their pole would be maxed out. Way to light of gear for lings, just my 2 cents anyways. Only other ling I saw hooked was another live bait person but he lost it. After everyone cleared out I hooked another and during this fight I kept thinking please stay on the hook! Was able to get this one in the net and in the boat. Looked a bit small but once it calmed down enough for me to put a tape on it, it measured right at 26. fourth time out and fourth keeper! Can't make it out Monday but should be on the water again Tuesday.....I hope the fishing stays good with this great streak of weather we are having.

DUDE! Your on a ROLL!!

Where are you fishing in 8-2? If you wont tell I understand. I crab a kayak all the time but not sure where to find rocky ling territory.

Your doing real good out there! Mono or stainless leader?

Motoboat... I've seen you ask this question a lot... Lings are pretty non-picky...But, I personally never have used stainless, just a heavier (25-30lb) mono leader and never lost a fish to teeth. If you fish live baits, use mono, you'll get much better action out of the bait. If it's a concern of teeth, the choice is yours, but mono is beyond adequate. If you're fishing the coast for the 50 pounders, maybe a different story, but even then I'd just use a heavier mono.

I use 40 lb maxima ultra green for leader and run braid on the reel. I did have the first ling of this year cut off the lower hook with it's teeth but it was after it was in the net and in the boat thrashing around on the floor of the boat. I don't feel stainless leader is needed, but would recommend heavy mono.
