Had such a good day yesterday we had to go again for the repeat. Another limit of clams and 18 red tails this time. Great day for fishing warm and sunny on the coast.

What kind of rig do you use for surf perch? Is there some sort of structure you look for, or can you pretty much do it any area in the surf?

X2?

Also, what do you like for bait? Sand shrimp? Prawns? How much weight? Rod length? Do you fish by the jetty in westport or??

Thanks!

Ok I'll try to cover all those questions, surf perch are easy to catch, I used razor clam necks and Berkeley night crawlers right in the surf. I wade out knee deep in the water and cast out. Drop shot or Carolina rigs work well.

Do you use heavy weights to try and hold it down in one place, or light weights and let the surf move the bait around? Also, how long/heavy of a rod do you use? I keep seeing one group of people advocate fishing heavy (e.g. 6 oz weight, 25 lb test or more), and another advocate going lighter (6-8 lb test).

I am and will always be one of the who believes in going as light as conditions will allow. My setup was a med-light fast action 7'6" st Croix rod and a penn battle 3000 with 8lbs test line. 1 oz weight slowly dragging in with the waves.
