The Westport jetty is one of my favorite spots to fish. You never know what will be at the end of your line. We got out on the jetty at about 9am with no wind. I fished the first half of the day for smaller greenling, bait fish, anything small. I was using sand shrimp and cocktail shrimp. Waste of my time cause I didnt get a bite! I did end up snagging a really nice male dungeness crab though at just over 7" the only thing biting my bait was the crabs, I reeled up 3 others that dropped off at the rocks. So finally I switched to jigs. I put on a dark curly tailed grub and went over to the ocean side where I tend to have better luck. I was casting out as far as I could and letting my jig get all the way to the bottom. I jigged it a few times and let it sit. Went to pick it back up and fish on! Got him in and it was a really nice sized black rock bass, and the 1st rock bass Ive ever caught! After a little while I get a lingcod on and he gets off right at the rocks. Then I switched to a 6" banjo minnow and casted out and let it sit then jigged it and bam fish on! Another nice black rock bass! Then I got another ling on but he was 21 and a half. Then I got a HUGE fish on, it started peeling out my drag so I tightened it a little and my line broke. 30lb braided, but It couldve been been weakened by a rock or something. But it was definitly big, wish I couldve gotten to see what it was. Lost my only minnow in that color too. Then my guy hooked into a small rock bass. I hooked into another ling but it was small too. Then I hooked into a large greenling the same size as the bass. Then as evening came the wind picked up and we didnt get a hit for quite some time so we decided to head back to the car. We didnt get any nice sized lings but we did get some nice bass! Wish I couldve gotten to fish with live bait, next time though!
