Together with John and two other friends left Everett’s boat launch around 4:50am and headed to south Whidbey for some lingcod. This was my first time in the last two years. We stopped in front of Cultus Bay to catch our live bait, but ended up hooking very large flounders. They kept coming up one after another, with no small ones. So we gave up on live bait, and moved half a mile west to the lingcod spot and started fishing. We used jig head hooks with plastics and herring. John hooked a 28” ling and that was the only one caught. We released also a few large rock fish including a Westport style black sea bass that was at least 5 lb, unusual for the area, and got some more halibut style flounders. Lots of fishing boats passed by us heading to halibut grounds, I suppose. It was just our boat in the area for a while, and then a few more arrived including a charter. The ranger boat stopped by to check on barbless hooks. We left around noon when the chops started to form from the south. Tight Lines.
