Friday September 18th I took a friend of mine from work out to see about some silvers. Began the run out to the Shipwreck in the dark and arrived at first light with lines in the water at 6:27 am. By 6:40 I had 1 - 5 pound silver and one very nice pink around 7 pounds in the boat. Second bigger than average buck of the year for me and he fought so much better than all of the pinks I caught during the peak of the fishery with exception to the one buck I caught a few weeks back. My next fish, another buck a little bigger than the first, came at 8:20 and again fought great. It’s amazing what a few pounds does to a fish as far as the fight goes. I joked with my buddy Dan that he could play my next fish. I recall fetchitup7 giving me this very same line a few weeks back when he caught 6 of our 8 pinks. Funny! Anyway, Dan’s turn came when his rod finally went off and after a nice fight he landed a very nice silver which was about 8 pounds. That was it until about 11:45 when Dan’s rod went off again this time yielding a silver that was about 10 pounds. Two nice pinks and a silver for me and 2 very nice silvers for Dan. We gave it 2 more hours and headed in at 2pm. One of the first boats out and one of the last few to leave. Fantastic weather! Sunny, very calm, and no wind.

Where are the silvers you caught? I only see pinks in your picture?

The two bigger fish in the picture look like silvers but they seem to be wild fish, which are not allowed to be kept in area 9. Might want to check your regs.

Wild silvers in area 9 are ok to keep. I don't know why, but that is that the regs say. If you can't keep wild ones in any area why is it ok in others? Keep up the good work

Dave great looking fish. Adam B. You need to look at the regs again. Silvers are Coho salmon Chinook are Kings and also known as black mouth. you can keep wild pinks/ humpys silvers/coho. I havent read Marine areas 1-7 but i know areas 8-10 wild is okay execpt for chinook/kings uless you fished the tulape bubble. I know the regs in this state arent easy to understand but if anyone reading this has any questions call the WDFW department and have one of there people explain it so you dont get a fine or lose your rights to fish. Claiming you didnt know is not going to work. If we dont work together we wont have a fishery.

I am late responding to all of your comments so I apologize for that. Thanks to Idstud and calico68 for your informed replies. Gotta love it when members comment on the regs before reading / knowing them themselves. I also love it when they try to point out species identification errors. I'm no expert here but I don't break the law, enjoy arresting and or citing those who do, and I know the difference between salmon species and if they are wild or not which in this report is irrelevant.

I assure you Adam that I always check the regs before fishing and because of my career field; I would never stray from that practice or put myself in a position where I might be breaking the law. That said I am looking at the 2009 - 2010 regs on page 113 it states: "September 1 - September 30 No min size. Daily limit 2 (combined), Plus 2 additional pink. Release Chinook and Chum." Nowhere does it state release wild Coho salmon.

The three to the right in the picture of the 5 fish are all silvers. The fish pictured alone is one of two larger than average pinks I caught that day. After fishing for salmon most of my adult life I am comfortable with my ability to identify the different salmon species. I will try not to be offended by the suggestion that I might be breaking the law or that am unable to tell the difference between a pink and a silver because you don't know me personally. If you did, you wouldn't have commented in the manner that you did. I also know you likely didn’t mean anything by it, nor do I in my response. Good luck fishing to all.

Come on Adam B, that was last year that you couldn't keep wild silvers in MA9. Pull a reg book out every once in a while...
