O dark thirty had my cousin and my brother in the boat chuggen along. We shot strait to Orcas and as the sun was peaking out, the downrigger was dropping. We trolled till about 8:45 am with nothing. We were using your standard flasher /coho killer set up.
Being super slow we all decided to jig for a bit. We were getting some sharks . We moved a little closer to shore and fished the outskirts of the halfmile worth of bait fish. NOTHING then on our second pass through the baitfish cousin got a fish on. As soon as it started spooling him I knew he had a salmon on. Doggies just dont run you out like that. After about 4 seconds of spooling it jumped! A nice king started to tail dance all over the place. Well, after a excellent fight we hauled it in and we had our first salmon in the boat. We didnt catch anymore salmon but that one was a decent 10lbs.
This was my cousins first salmon ever and the first time I have had a salmon in my boat from the ocean. So even though we only had one all day it was well worth it and made all the research worth it
At the launch a fish checker was there. She stated that we were the only ones with salmon today.
Its slow but there out there. Dont just get stuck on one type of fishing.
Good luck.
P.s. Jigs were Pt. Wilson Darts.
