Hit Hoodsport this Saturday and did OK. We fished the hatchery zone from my buddies boat for about 2 hrs (between 8 and 10am) and fished Twanoh (SP) state park for about 1/2 hour. Between the 3 of us, we all landed at least one fish and lost many more. We only had one snag on a live fish and one snag on a dead fish (the bottom was covered in salmon carcasses that were stripped of the eggs).
We threw everything at them from yarn, to sandshrimp, prawns, herring, jigs, spinners, spoons, flies and plugs. Herring under a float had the most hits (and misses), and spoons and spinners tipped with prawns were pretty good as well. And float/jig tipped with prawns seemed pretty good too. Most hookups around us seemed to be on the 'hoodsport rig' - green corky and yarn rigged drift style and retrieved at moderate pace.
I think the key was just finding good water to hit. It was pretty clear after we dropped anchor that we were not in a 'hot spot', but we did OK.
Only saw one snagger. He'd run his little boat right in from of everyone, cast into the largest school of fish he could see, and snag away. If I didn't need to be a good example to my 'little brother' (from the Big Brothers program) I probably would have launched my heaviest buzz bomb at the jerks head...
Everyone else was there to have fun and really tried to get along.
We didn't have any luck at Twanoh State Pk, but saw a few caught. Lots of fly fisherman in the water.
