My cousin Mike and I decided to brave the cold and rain for a little blackmouth fishing. This was his first time blackmouth fishing. He had heard about my awesome day of blackmouth fishing just the week before.
We arrived at Armeni about 0830. I was surprised to see there were a lot of trailers in the parking lot. I was thinking to myself, "these guys must be fishing in the derby that goes on every weekend".
We started fishing once we were in 140' of water straight out from the launch. We turned right and headed for Saltys. We had two solid takedowns but no fish, right from the get-go. The third takedown was on Mike's pole. He reeled the fish in and I netted it. I got out the measuring tape to make sure the fish was a keeper. The fish measured 23". Mike really wanted to keep the fish so we did. Turns out that was a good decision on our part because we did not have any more bites the rest of the time.
The rain and cold finally got to us so we trailered the boat about noon. The fish-checker guy said we were the only guys that had a fish so far. Most of the derby contestants had already returned to the ramp for the day.
Guess we had a good day fishing, compared to most others.
