Took our second trip to Sequim over part of the Memorial Day Weekend. Just my brother-in-law Tom and myself, with John joining us on Sunday. Great weather Friday but windy at times Sat and Sun. Fished our standard spot with jigs when the winds and currents would allow it. Tried a couple of other spots when we couldn't touch bottom.
On Friday we each had one hit that was a halibut. Mine only stayed on for 10-20 seconds before coming off. Tom's fish took over a hundred yards of line on the first run and actually broke a hook on the jig about 5 minutes later. Based upon our earlier experiences with big fish, we think it would go 125-150ish. Too bad.
On Saturday we only got one hit. I got a 56 inch halibut (the book says it should be 87.1 pounds, but I've lifted a 90 before and couldn't lift this one as high as that one...) We also got a skate and snagged a couple of dogfish. They must have been curious about the jigs but weren't hit near the mouth, so I don't think they were trying to eat them...
On Sunday we got no hits between the three of us. We had problems getting down due to the wind and the currents. We lost one jig while we had a big line angle.
I heard that the PA halibut derby was won by a 76 pounder. It's too bad the derby didn't extend to Sequim, cause then we would have entered and would have won...! We just don't have a good spot at PA like we do at Sequim. That's our 5th big fish out of that area in four years! Oh well. Derby tickets usually bring me bad luck anyways.
Next stop, Westport for Kings!
