After seeing some reports about Lost Lake in Maltby, I headed out that way to see if I could catch some of these aggressive Trout.

I got ahold of a few Elgin Gods Tooth lures but the best I could do was 9 fish that I caught and released with barbless hooks, so I tried a method that I really had little experience with the Thursday evening before Saturday.

I fished a slip bobber Trout Magnet set up that a fellow fisherman told me about and worked the North end of the lake. It took awhile but my first fish was larger than the ones that I caught on the Elgin lure. I ended up with 18 that night with a hold over at 15" in the mix, but left excited to spend a day with this set up.

Hit the lake about 8:30 and hardly anyone was there. Worked the north end again mainly because if the wind and got two. Went just right or the boat launch area and ended the day with nearly 100 Trout caught. I was beat to say the least. It was a lot of work battling the wind and the fish. Pink was the ticket, but after my 5 or so bodies wore out I tried other types of jigs and they all worked. I even cut the tail off of a MoGlo and that worked. So many missed strikes and shake offs it was crazy.

I really loved fishing this way as the all but one we're hooked in the top lip and simple to dehook theses guys. One holdover again and a small amount of 11" fish and the rest were 9" range.

Went back Sunday and only caught 28 as the lake had a ton of pressure.

I would have never dreamed of this, but it happened and it was a hoot.

Can you explain this slip bobber setup? What depth was the bobber set at? Was their weight besides the jig? Were you imparting any action to the lure? I'm curious to try this when our local lake opens.

Jake,

First, I bought some Danielson bobber stoppers. I also bought a very slim bobber from Links Tackle right before they closed. Maybe 4" long and has a hole to thread your line into. I put a bead between the bobber and a very small size barrel swivel, maybe size 10. Then I use some Maxima Flourocarbon leader tied to the Trout Magnet. Leader length is based off of the shortest depth that you will be fishing in. Mine is about 28" long. With the moveable bobber stopper, your leader will become what every depth that you want, but not shorter than the length between the swivel and the Trout Magnet. If you want to fish 6', then adjust the bobber stop to that length. This way you can cast much easier with a shorter leader which will turn into a longer leader once the bobber hits the water as the trout Magnet sinks to the desire depth because the bobber hits the stopper.

I do twitch the bobber from time to time, but if the fish are surfacing you just need to cast into their area and wait, with a few twitches here and there. If no surface action, you will need to twitch it if the water is glass. If there is some ripple, this will create enough action on its own to get strikes.

I hope that this helps....good luck.

If I had an anchor that day, I would have caught 50 more at least because if the wind pushing me out of position so much.

I think Thrill has some good bobbers, Fred Meyer for Trout Magnets, and I would suggest Berkley Trilene Flourocarbon 100 yard pack at $10 as a better value than Maxima's 25 yards for $8
