Took a friend out to Lake Cavanaugh for my first trip to this lake. Had lines in the water by 9 am. Trolled various Kokanee gear all day and didn't hook a single Kokanee. Caught 10 cutthroat, released 8 and gave 2 to my buddy that looked like they wouldn't survive catch and release before calling it quits. Marked and caught most fish over by the islands. Trolled 4 lines at various depths but only the trout were biting. Saw lots of fish surfacing when the winds were calm. 3 other boats out. Nice views of the snow-covered peaks in the horizon. Seems like tons of trout opportunities here but not so much luck on the salmon for me. Water temp was a brisk 38 degrees.

Hope to try later when the weather warms!

I was out there that same day and got one trout with 4 lines in the water. I tried every Kokanee and trout set up I had. I am impressed you got 10. Guess I did not have the right gear. Sure marked a lot of good sized fish though.

Thanks Petdawg. I know there are Kokanee in there somewhere! We caught 4 cutties in the first 30 min then then a triple later in the afternoon. Otherwise it was just 1 here and there. I think we covered every inch of that lake.

I live in this area and haven't fished Cavanaugh in years. It can be very productive for kokanee and trout. I bank fish other area lakes for rainbow trout. If anyone has an open seat for Cavanaugh, I'd be willing to chip in. Early mornings and weekdays are no problem.
