When I posted my last Ward Lake report it came to the attention of the areas fish biologist James Losee. He has been doing a study on Ward Lake and needed more fish to finish the study and asked me to help. I roped Trent and Eric in as well and we had 3 boats, 4 people, and 6 rods in the water by 7am in the morning.

That was it. Eric had 1 bite and I had 1 bite while I was talking with Trent; see video.
By 9:30am I was done with not having any bites and James was coming to get my fish samples from last week when I did much better. Trent started bass fishing and he caught one. Eric and his son kept trolling pulling in a nice cutthroat and later a rainbow.

This lake normally has lots of small kokanee (10-11 inches) but not this year. Fewer fish but 13-14 inches.

Water temp was 68 degrees. The sky was clear and sunny. There was that fall chill that caused the lake to create fog (mist) rising off the water.

We are in a battle! Angler against fish! We need an arsenal of weapons and at my site you will find some of those different weapons. For all those who wannafish a lure come in and take a look at WannafishALure.com.

I've only fished there 3 times this summer but I'll share my experiences. I've caught kokanee in the 12-14 in range that looked healthy but NEVER marked many fish schooled up. My opinion is there aren't many in there. The lake is warm and shallow in most areas. Trolling the small deep zone can be tough due to vegetation and you're constantly turning because it's so small. Strikes were 50% kokanee and 50% rainbows on typical kokanee gear. Darker colors worked better for me and my trips were in bright sun.

Just my limited experience.

Just tried Ward yesterday...Got one nice 15" male kokanee, just starting to turn color and a beautifully marked 13" cutthroat. Arrived at 8 am, so not the best time for the early bite. Lake is warm and very green. Deepest I found was about 55 ft, but so much vegetation showing on the lowrance it looks like the bottom is 30ft everywhere. Will try it earlier next time and bring my camera!
