My father and I took the pontoons out for our second voyage, choosing Rattlesnake Lake as our destination. Overall the experience warrants a high score, with angling results deserving a lower score, so we go ahead and average it out to be a 3 out of 5.
We arrived at 17:45 and it was p-a-c-k-e-d with picnic goers, paddle boarders and all recreation in between. We were 2 of 3 fishing vessels on the lake. As soon as the sun retreated behind the ridge a bit, the surface came alive with fish, bugs, hawks, etc. Beautiful setting on a pristine lake.
I ended up hooking and landing 3 fish, two steelhead smolt and small cutthroat trout. All fish caught on a pink/white wee Dick Nite, trolled (rowed) at relatively high speed. All fish released safely to feed the birds of prey. I tried my hand at fly fishing for the first time, which was fun but unproductive. My father had a few hits on a trolled fly but none stuck. The fish were there but we may not have had the pattern dialed in to maximize the 'catching'.
I have heard of fabled 12-15" cutthroat trout and imagine that they lurk deeper in the lake. I was pretty much on the first 3' of the water column so I didn't have a chance.
All in all a fun evening.
On a side note, does anyone have suggestions for a good but inexpensive 30lb thrust trolling motor and batter setup for a pontoon? Also, any suggestions on a fish finder that could mount to the 'toon.?
Thanks and tight lines!
