Headed out to Silver Lake early, parked across the street from Thornton Sullivan Park and was on the fishing pier by 5:00 and fishing by 5:10. Sky was partly cloudy and temp was 55 degrees... water temp at 15 feet deep off the pier was 70 degrees. Began fishing with Power Eggs, green on one rig (3' leader) and fl. orange on the other (4' leader). Nothing during the first hour... not even a nibble! Finally, about 6:45 had my first hit... on the green PE, but no hook-up. At 7:30 finally had a hard hit and reeled in a chunky 13" Rainbow. Changed up one rig to pink PE (mouse tail) and shortly after had a hit which turned out to be a 9 1/2" Yellow Perch. Changed up the green PE for chartreuse and began to have more hits, lost two fish on the way to the pier, and finally hooked a 14" beautiful Rainbow at about 9:00... fought hard all the way to the net, thrashing around on the surface multiple times. By 9:00 the sun was burning off most of the cloud cover, and the bite tailed off. I had brought along another rig set up with a float, hoping to catch some Yellow Perch on nightcrawlers. Retained two of 8" and 71/2" after releasing a half dozen in the 4" to 5" range. By now was really becoming warm, beach was filling up with children and parents, lots of swimmers in the water around the pier... at noon a park camp-program kicked in and the water was filled with kayaks and paddle boards. Time to cut my losses and leave for home.
Saw about 10 other fishermen come and go through the morning, saw 5 or 6 fish caught. With Summer in full swing now and warmer weather ahead, I imagine that trout fishing will be more difficult until Fall. PTL!
