We didn't get up too early again and got out on the lake about 8am. We were fishing blind because our fishfinder broke a wire the night before. It's out of commission until I find the time here at home to fix it. At first we headed south, but the moss, algae and weeds only got thicker. This lake has a serious problem. We did, however, see a tiger muskie about 36" long just hanging there above the weedline. I tried to get a picture of him, but the water was a little too green with algae. There was a breeze out of the north, so we paddled that direction. Maybe the water would be clearer at the north end. The water became more clear once we were about a half mile north of the state park. We trolled our way up past the resorts (where the water was much better) to the railroad trestle, about 5 miles, getting the most bites on a bright pink wedding ring and an orange spoon. We brought a few rainbows to the boat, released all but 2 for dinner.
It was hot and we occasionally dangled our feet over the side of the kayak to cool off. At the north end we passed under the trestle to explore the other side. It was shallow and weedy. The hubby had just pulled his foot out of the water - had not even set it down in the kayak yet - when there was a huge swirling splash right next to the boat where his foot had been. Something big had just gone for his foot! A tiger muskie? We didn't dangle our feet much after that.
The morning breeze had increased by the time we headed back south to the launch. The bite had dropped off and we just paddled/drifted back to the park in about an hour. All the muck on the surface of the water was gone with the wind. There's a nice little fish cleaning table with water and a garbage can for waste near the boat launch, which we didn't notice until it was too late. I would have rated the lake a 4, but for the mucky water most of the time. When we were there 4 or 5 years ago, I don't remember the water being so bad. I hope they can resolve the problem soon. Tight lines.
