NOAA got the permit to WDFW so Area 11 was opening but the Point was having the Bite of Tacoma so parking would be horrible for the boat launch at Point Defiance. Consequently I met Glenn and Cami at the American Lake WDFW boat launch to see if I could get any kokanee.
We were fishing about 5:30am and I quit at 9:30 because I had to be at work at 1pm. It was about 55 out and mostly cloudy. Water temperature was about 66. There was a breeze but it stopped about 8:30 to give glass like conditions as the sun started to burn the clouds away.
We had a few bites but it was not like the previous weekend which seems to be the case for me when I fish with them this year.
I forgot to bring a stacker clip so I had a longline out with, at first, a proto type lure and Dick Nite Pink Hypnosis. Then on the downrigger at 32 feet I had a DN Hypnosis and a Mini Squiddy Thang Pink with a hammered silver blade.
I was preoccupied until Glenn said I had one on the longline. I start reeling it in and he says you got one on the downrigger…a double. Oh no what to do? Well, top line most likely planter trout. I reeled in the downrigger line. Glenn netted it and I dropped it in the boat and turned to the longline which still had a very well hooked 13 inch planter trout. The deep fish was a 15 inch cutthroat. Both fish became dinner for my son and I as well as my neighbor. That Cutthroat’s meat would rival the redness of a Coho.
Glenn all those schools of fish appear to be perch but there are silver fish hanging out with them. The schools were hanging out in 20-40 feet in deeper water. I didn’t pay attention to how deep we were in though.
On the video I went down to 40 feet which is the dark part. Most of the other times I was between 35-27 feet. As the sun started to come out I think it got brighter in the water. Also had a smack down with a perch.
