The wife and I decided to hike up to Goat Lake on a rainy Memorial Day weekend Saturday, thanks being given to all who gave their lives in service of this country so that we can enjoy past times like this. As mentioned, it was rainy, and a bit on the cool side, so I didn't fish long, but despite only being able to wet my line for about an hour I landed three Brookies and had at least two other solid hits. The only lure I used (because it kept working) was a 1/8oz gold and crimson Kastmaster. I tried some standard retrieves, but what worked best today was an extremely twitchy retrieve, more like jigging, combined with getting the lure all the way to the bottom. This lake gets quite deep right from shore in some spots. I was counting close to 30 seconds before the lure would finally hit bottom. The fish weren't anything gigantic, but the action was pretty good at a time that I would still consider to be early season given the elevation of the lake (3000'). We tried getting to the rock pile near the waterfall at the south end of the lake that Mike mentioned in a previous report, however, the trail is extremely overgrown now and every bush dumped tons of water on us as we tried to make our way there. We got quite close until we finally reached a point where the vegetation was so thick that we just gave up and found another spot.

I must have accidentally selected Brown Trout when writing the report, I was fishing for Brook Trout though. I don't think there are browns in that lake.

Good to know there are brookies in there! I used to hike to this lake back in the 90s. Need to go back. I did try fishing it once with a gold quarter oz little cleo, but no luck. I will try your technique next time I'm there.

Why would anyone want to catch such small fish?

bruceka49, I would happily answer your question if you truthfully want to know the answer. I can't tell from your comment though if you really want to know or are just being derogatory. Post another comment if you want to hear my thoughts.
