We went to Curlew Lake for the first time. Myself a friend and his three kid's spent Spring Break camping at Curlew Lake State Park. Arrived at the Curlew State park at 6pm on Sunday evening of the 3rd . Set up camp and got a good night sleep.
Monday 4/4 Morning started with heavy rain/sleet Had a small break about 11am. I ran down to the dock casted out with my two poles using Power egg's Yellow & Red on a 4ft Leader with a slip sinker weight. Didn't have to wait long, rod tip hammered to the water's edge and beautiful 17 rainbow was on the dock. Then the rain came back with high winds. Small break at 6:14pm ran down to the dock and 3 more fish smallest being 14".
Tuesday 4/5 mostly cloudy back to dock and with 5 people we pull in a total of 22 fish smallest was about 12" wanted to through back but started to bleed. All fish so far are bright red meat like a Kokanee but these are high mountain trout. Elevation 3600 with the lake average depth 35' and many areas 95' deep.
Wednesday 4/6 65degree's partly sunny Didn't matter where you fished still or trolling we caught our limit within 2 hours that is 25 fish with more than half being above 14". Night time comes and fresh caught dinner comes in 3 trout for me and my friend 1 each for kid's.
Thursday 4/7 73 degrees mostly sunny. Learning to fly fish pulling a Purple/Black leach and a Olive Wooly Bugger barbless. Released over 30 trout only keep anything bigger than 17". Don't worry plenty of fish over 17" in this lake. Had a blast on fly rod. More Trout for dinner.
Friday 4/8 78 degrees Full Sun. Some more fly fishing but most were released. Later about 3pm Checked out and headed home with 50 fish packed in cooler. Kicked all remaining food left in big cooler and put all trout in it! =)
