Hit American Lake today for five hours after trying a few days ago and had to cut it early due to no pee on the kicker. Got that fixed and decided to give it another go. Started out in my normal spots and trolled all over. Marked a few fish in the 20-30ft and also on the bottom. Most of the marks on the ff were Red and I know this is not a koke so anyone know what they might be? Did see some yellow marks hugging the bottom. There were a few other boats out and no bites for them. The lake is very cold still only 45.2 was the warmest I could find. Did find a snag at 35ft in 90 ft of water lost my gear was in the north end middle headed into the cove area from the main lake.

So will give it a few weeks and give it another try. Tight lines.

I wasn't going to waste a rain-free day at home so I went to my favorite place for lunch, American Lake. Trolled from one end to the other. Tried some still fishing. NOT A THING. Had my sandwich and a beautiful day on the lake. Good to know both of my motors are ready for spring.

We have been fishing Roosevelt in 37 degree water. All of the action has been in the top 15'. The fish have not been showing on the sonar to speak of. Long setbacks on the downriggers (100') with depth set at 12 to 18'. UV stuff has worked the best. Some guys have been using side planers with success too. Almost forgot the lead core out three colors with 50-60' fluorocarbon 12# leader has worked well too. That puts it about 150' behind the boat. 1.7 to 1.8 mph with pink hoochies.
Hope that helps - Alan

I have the K-fever bad! I may hit Cavanaugh this weekend and see what's going on up there. If I make I'll post a report ASAP.

Hunter, I had the same experience yesterday that you did. My temperature gizmo said that the 45 degrees extends all the way to the bottom, which would be expected at this time of the year. While downriggeral likes the top 15’ in Roosevelt, I’ve had no bites trolling shallow this month in American. Did that fellow in the inflatable paddle boat anchored near the VA land any perch?

Not sure if he did never made it over that far to talk with him. Did see him out there casting around but never saw a fish landed but that does not mean anything. I say another guy at the south end in the corner fishing another spot for perch. I have a feeling the kokanee are still hanging out in the bottom 10 ft of the water column. I have seem a lot of ice fishing videos and the fish are hugging the bottom in small schools same thing I saw on my ff. I just hope this year is a bit better then last years slump only time will tell. I have never tried perch so might have to drop a line down and catch and few and fry them up for dinner one night.

Tight lines,
Eric

Hunter: Regarding “bottom hugging” - - A lot of the area south of a line more-or-less between Silcox and the VA is about 60 feet deep. In recent trips I’ve noted very few sonar fish on the bottom (or anywhere) there. But north of that line where the bottom slopes off to 80 feet or so I’ve seen many more small schools on the bottom, including little sonar returns that might be perch. The other day I wind-drifted and drug bottom with a drop shot there. A few perch-type nibbles, but no hookups. This month I’ve observed two modest midge hatches underway; If the fish are not too lethargic, they might be feeding now and then on chironomid larva or pupa near the bottom.

Keep trying,
Bilge

We have been catching the heck out of the perch the last month. They are smaller than last year, with only a few big "Jumbo" perch over 11"+. Most of them have been about 9" long, which is OK. We have been dropshotting them with either Panic Minnows or crappie tubes, with the bigger ones coming on the PM's. So me real good fish frys recently.
