Hey guys,

I saw on Thursday that Dog Lake had been stocked; however, I did not feel like getting into the frenzy that happens up there on Memorial Weekend. So, I hit it today on my day off. I was slacking this morning and didn't have a line in the water until noon. Within ten minutes, I had two 11-12 inchers. I thought, "this trip is going to end fast."

Immediately after that thought, the bite died for TWO hours. There was a bug hatch, and I've never seen Dog Lake so alive with fish doing acrobatics out of the water (it was insane). They were definitely in a feeding frenzy on the mosquitos and anything else that had hatched. Seeing all the top water action, I decided to use a Wooly Bugger with a float water bobber. NOTHING. I tried Kastmasters and Rooster Tails. Nothing. I went back to my power eggs. NOTHING!!!

Finally a heavy downpour came, moving the insects off of the water, and the trout went to the bottom. I caught my last three within fifteen minutes of the rain. Fun day, despite the dry two hour stretch. The Tally for the day was:

3) 11-12 inch Rainbows
1) 13.5 incher (I was lucky, you can only keep one over 14 inches here)
1) 15.5 inch 1.5 pounder.

Pink power eggs on the bottom seemed to be the only thing that worked for me. Air temperature was probably in the low sixties. Use lots of weight (slip sinkers is my choice) and a long enough leader to float above the weeds. Ten years ago this lake had no weeds/ milfoil, but it's beginning to take over which disappoints me. It's thick. Please people clean your boats, kayaks etc between uses, Milfoil multiplies faster than a heard of rowdy rabbits.

Keep it clean

Joe Tucker

Nice fish..... I love Dog Lake and when I would hike back into the dumbbell Lakes and ponds all you need is light tackle. Awesome pack trip for 2 -7 days. So I have a question did you drive up coming from the West side? If so about a 3.5 miles back on the right side is a small pond that is creek fed ( Millridge Creek ) The pond is a crystal blue and clear. If you cast a fly in from the top creek there is some huge trout in there, this pond is so small most people drive right by. Careful the fish get spooked fast. At the south end is a small park/picnic area and trail its called ( Knuppenburg Lake Campground
Randle, WA 98377) . You can see it on any map green trails White Pass 303... Good luck and Tight Lines

I'm an Eastsider, but got o Knuppenburg a few times a year. I know the lake all to well. It is stocked every year with Brown Trout. I'm actually surprised they haven't stocked it yet. I happened to be there last year on the day the stocked it in a kayak. The Fish and Wildlife truck pulled up right along the guard rail and basically extended a slip and slide from the guard rail, down the bank into Knuppenburg. It was pretty cool to watch. I do have pictures of the event! In addition to the Browns that are there, I have caught rainbow and even a Brook there. It's a very pretty place but the fish (in the clear water) are very spooky. I've always had my best luck for Browns after the stock with Kastmasters.

In addition, at the top of white pass, where the Pacific Crest Trail takes off is a gorgeous lake -- Deer Lake. It's about a 4 mile round trip, and fairly easy. Very nice Cutthroat in there!

Good to see someone else has been there. The lake is the size of a postage stamp and many people just pass by all the time. I like to fish the lake in Aug/Sept with fly but every time I've been there, I'm the only person on the lake. Tight Lines and thanks for the reply. =)
