Well, after taking a little hike to a pond and striking out, I went a few miles down the road and tried to some fishing at Knuppenburg. It was beautiful and it was fun to raft around and see the numerous depth changes in this little lake. There were several other people fishing and none of them seemed to be catching anything. I tried a spoon, spinner, and a wedding ring spinner with powerbait and didn't catch a thing. I did see two trout following my spoon after a deep retrieve though, so there's at least two fish in there. I put my thermometer in and the temp is only 46 degrees which means the few fish in there probably don't feel like moving much. Several more people arrived as I was leaving, so there's lots of fishing pressure. I would stay away from this lake this year.

I fished Knuppenburg on Friday morning with my fly rod and spinning rod and I hooked one brown trout on a black fly. It hit it hard right on the surface where the creek comes out...Fought for a few seconds but he shook the fly. Tried a few more casts and switched flies and nothing. So I switched to the casting rod and started throwing some spoons and spinners deeper...Not a damn thing. Not much moving around or surfacing that I saw. Weather was typical Memorial Day at White Pass: fog, rain, a little wind, a little sun, and cold. So I packed up and headed back down to Packwood to look at ugly people and ugly stuff for sale at the flea market...Lots of both.

This is one of my favorite lakes to fish, since I was a kid. One suggestion is longer (than normal) leaders. I fly fish typically, or use a clear bobber and fly. Nice browns are found, as well as rainbows.
