Hiked up to Mason Lake with my little raft today to do some fishing. I took the old trail up and the main trail down. The old trail is obvious and pretty steep and follows the outlet creek all the way to the lake. Took me just under an hour to reach the lake. It is pretty steep and goes right up with switchbacks only in the beginning than the climbing starts and it doesn't mess around. Old trail is obvious the whole way up and pretty cool as it goes right along the outlet creek. Inflated the raft and just set out on the lake when it started to pour down rain. Didn't fish from the raft to long as I didn't want it to fill with water and it was a little chilly. Paddled back in and fished from shore for about an hour but only managed to hook into 2 small 6" rainbows. Fish were rising for the small knats that were on the water but they were all small. My least successful trip to mason lake but still fun and a good work out. Their are large fish in the lake reaching to 14" but they tend to be away from shore towards the back of the lake in my experience. Rain never let up so decided to pack up and head back down. Saw one other guy fishing up there to the right of the outlet but didn't see him have any luck. Will be back soon when forecast has very little chance of rain and plan on hitting the lakes past mason which have very good fishing with little pressure. No pics as I didn't want my iPhone to get soaked.
