Decided to try my luck on the big lake for cuts. I live less than 7 miles from the lake, but had never pulled a line. So at 0600, hooked up the big boat and headed down to the storage lot to grab a couple poles and the fw tackle bag.
As I checked out the boat, I found I had really low batteries and couldn't turn over the motors. The shop had left my batteries switched on. So, I pulled out the charger and let it work. I spent 45 minutes charging and used the time to get everything else squared away and ready to go. At the launch at 0730, was able to fire off both motors, so went ahead and splashed the boat.
Headed to the South end of MI and headed up the 90' line. Started marking fish right away. Started with a dodger/hootchie combo (orange), then switched over to switch to a Brad's Mini Cut Plug (perch) working between the 20' & 30' on the wire. Made it up to the S end of Seward Park with nothing. Switched over to an Aces Hi (green) and started working a zig zag across the narrows.
Around 10:30, I watched the rod just get pasted. Hit like a freight train & no doubt about it being a nice fish. Out of the clip and the hooked up! Fish was out of the water a couple of times. After a exciting fight, I had a nice thick fish in the net. Roughly 20" and probably 2-3 lbs. Unfortunately too fired up to remember to snap a picture before I safely released the fish.
Around 11:30 the lake was starting to get crazy with activity. So ended the fishing day. Picked up the wife and heading into Lk. Union for some lunch. Everyone with a new boat was on the water. Scary!
Even though things started out bad, was still able to salvage a good outing on a very close fishery, I'm hooked! Will definitely be out there on a regular basis for that when the Salmon season isn't open. Like the fact that the fish seem to be much bigger on Wash than Samsh. Maybe a little tougher to find, but worth the wait. Appreciate all the previous reports and PM's from a couple of NWFR folks to help me out. BTW....will also be making a battery charge the night before a part of my routine!
