Fished Deer lake from 2:30 to 5:00 when the wind really started howling this afternoon. I just installed a Lowrance HDS 7 with the structure & side scan so I spent the first hour or so looking at all the new underwater structure that I never knew about. Found a big log in 45 feet that comes within 6 feet of the surface & it was holding a lot of fish. After trying a few different baits I picked up a jerkbait & started catching Smallmouth. They actually wanted a fast erratic cadence, much closer to summer jerkbait fishing with quick long rips than the usual slow twitch with long pauses that normally works in cold water. Caught 7 Smallmouth & 1 Rainbow & also lost a really good Largemouth, looked about 4 lbs. No fish over 2 lbs but caught em fast when I finally found em & they were hitting it hard so I gave it a 4 star rating. A lot of boats trolling around the public access catching planter Rainbows hand over fist

Yeah I'm loving the structure and side imaging. You can fish a lake for years & never really know how much stuff you're missing. I'm really excited about using it in summer for jigging for Mackinaw & also finding some new offshore humps & boulder fields in 25-50 FOW for late summer/fall Smallmouth. When you get on those deep schools in august you can load the boat in a hurry, it's finding them that's the hardest part. Hopefully this will make it a lot easier.
