After reading recently that you can catch fish from the boat ramp at Magnussen I tried it out tonight. First stopped at Matthews Beach, found no good looking spots. Then down to Magnussen, around 7pm, with a worm under a bobber fished crappie jig style. Did not find a huge swarm of perch, but did catch a 7 and a 6 inch. Also caught what is in the picture, a bass lookin thing with red eyes. What is that? Is it edible? I hope so, as it's in my freezer heh. And also, what is the gold colored one? The other guy on the dock caught that on a floating minnow lookin lure.

Was fun to catch a fish I've never caught before and seen another I have never caught before, so giving it 5 stars.

What you caught is a rock bass. I'm sure they are edible the other one is a northern pikeminnow and though I heard they are edible I don't know anyone who would eat it. Also the pikeminnow is a predator to juvenile salmon and trout. They pay money on the Columbia for each fish caught and brought back then they euthanize them.

Just a quick word of advice. Keeping fish you can't identify is a quick way to get a ticket. A good way to speed that process up is to post pictures of it on the internet. Hoping you take this the right way.

Rock bass are good eating, similar to bass and panfish. About all the Pikeminnow (AKA squawfish before PC) are good for is cut bait.

They euthanize them?!?!?!? Thank God! I thought they killed 'em!

squaw fish = Eagle lunch. :-) Smack 'em and let the Eagles come get 'em.

My 7-yr old son caught an 11 inch Pikeminnow the other day off the dock in Meydenbauer. Smacked it in the head and left it for dead. Those things are NOT recommended for human consumption out of Lake WA in any quantity. I believe it is the only fish with this recommendation.

Years ago I caught a NPM. Curiosity ruled the day and I baked it in foil with onions, herbs n spices. It looked and smelled pretty good when baked and the foil removed. The actual taste and texture weren't too bad. But...there was no way of getting around the "Y" bones that fish had. Like some say about carp - "Plank cook it, toss the fish, and serve the plank."
