Well, it's been a couple years since our last trip to Walupt lake so we decided to go up there last week. We fished a bit on Wednesday evening and Thursday, but Friday the fishing was cut short by a thunderstorm. First evening the flatfish and lead weight with a slow troll caught a couple decent keepers. Earlier in the day I had unexpectedly caught a fairly large (for that lake) fish playing around with a silver Blue Fox from shore. With the whole family there, I was not able to dedicate quite as much time to fishing.
Thursday evening was pretty good, we threw back a couple smaller fish and kept three. My son caught the largest, fatest Rainbow I have ever laid eyes on in that lake coming in at 16". This was caught on pop gear and a black and green wedding ring. The flatfish was not producing that day.
While we were there, several fly fishermen were doing ok with the best results on a float 50 yards from shore. My son was able to catch a small one on his fly rod Saturday morning before we left.
The campground was fairly crowded and we had to wait a day to get a lakefront site. There were the usual boneheads that were out there using bait even thought this is a selective gear lake. Still think we out-fished them.
All and all a good trip with great scenery that is hard to beat. The water was a bit warmer than usual which made it easier to wade out and cast from shore. The fishing seemed a little slower than two years ago, but we were there a month earlier and the water was much cooler.
