Pushed off at 8:30 A.M. with beloved cousin visiting from Michigan. Every time we hit this wonderful lake we have the time of our lives. July 1 was no exception. We found the lake surface like glass and missed the dreadful winds that have plagued our state the last year or so. The view of the snow-capped Enchantments while traversing the lake always takes our breath away. The endless bald eagles, goldens, and osprey serenaded us and put on an aerial show. Even had we caught zero fish, it would have been worth the travels. But zero was not the number. Caught several moderate sized perch on the beautiful east end of the lake. We put them back so that we could catch em again when even larger next month. Cousin Michael was the first to find the rainbows. They are a beautiful 12 inch fighter this year with a gorgeous pink stripe. I managed to bring in a couple myself.
Then, Michael hooked into what was obviously a nice trout. We kind of figured he had an 18 incher, judging by the fight it was putting on. The trout refused to surface. When his stout rod took a bend we started to wonder. Finally, he brought the trout near the surface and the maelstrom in the water indicated he had a sizeable fighter. I grabbed my fly fishing net to scoop him out and leaned outward. Laughing, I tossed the net back into the boat and indicated he would not fit in THAT net! I grabbed my salmon net and saw cousin's eyes light up.
Second attempt I hoisted him out of the water. One big boy! Incredibly strong and hearty. Tourist passersby asked if it was a salmon. Ha.
Didn't have scales, but I'd put him at 8.5 to 9.5 lbs. Measured out at 22 inches.
Winds finally came up in mid afternoon and it was time to scoot after catching trout, perch, and the little sculpin. The scenery and raptor show is incomparable there. Tops what I recently saw in Alaska. God is quite an artist.
Yet another treasured outing with a beloved family member.
Thank You FIsh Lake and the Cove Resort!

Great report, you have me wishing I was there as well. As a side note, a 22 inch trout is probably not over about 4 or 5 pounds, normally. When in doubt, if you have length measurements, you can take a girth measurement as well. The internet has several equations for getting the weight of a fish when you have length and girth. (Length x girth x girth) divided by 800 is the usual one used. In this case, the girth (longest measurement around the fish) would need to be about 18 inches (22 x 18 x 18 / 800 = 8.91 pounds).

PS, great trout, no matter what it weighed. It might have been fat enough, but it does not matter, it is a GREAT fish.
