So I really wanted to get out on the salt one more time before ling cod season closes but knew wouldn't have enough time so chose to give Lake WA one more run before the derby. My neighbor Sam has been wanting to go out fishing as he keeps seeing me back up the tin cup down the driveway each time when I get back; so I said if you want to go, be waiting at the end of the driveway by 6am and I will pick you up.
Woke up at 5am to an absolutely gorgeous morning with not a cloud in the sky and no wind! Perfect! Sam was waiting so picked him up and we were on the water by 6:30 and started trolling right away but this time I tied up a new color Brad's cut plug going with the Seahawk colored one( it's actually named that!) and stuffed it with a concoction of chopped herring and salmon dipping sauce. The other rod I put on the ace hi-fly pink hootchie with sparkles and tipped with pink gulp maggots.
One rod with the hootchie was on the down rigger at 30 feet and the other line with a 2 1/4 ounce weight and put it 100 feet behind the boat. Around 8am was making a turn and had the Seahawk line get hammered and saw a big splash way behind the boat so grabbed the rod and handed to Sam and it was fish on! He worked it in but not before a few more jumps and runs under the boat but finally got it in the net and it was Sam's 1st Lake WA cutthroat. Now he is about 73 years old but almost jumped out of the boat he was so excited! What was really cool is check out the colors on this fish~ just wished I had got a better picture of it before putting it on ice as it was blue, green and silver! Yep Seahawk colors!!
Was hard to leave as the water was like glass for the 1st time in many that I have fished out there but alas, have to make a living so we were back in by 10am and am looking forward to Saturday's derby ( but think I will sneak out Sunday morning for father's day for lings) haha
See you on the water!
