Fished the ship canal behind SPU around 4:00. The smallies have moved in! I using my ultralight setup with a Rapala Ultralight Minnow crankbait in yellow perch color. Around my tenth cast I hooked into the one in the picture, about 12''. First smallmouth of the year! Shortly after that I also hooked into a small rock bass. After that, nothing. I switched crankbaits, no luck. Went with a dropshot with a gulp minnow and hooked into a decent rock bass, but he wiggled off at the bank. I know dropshots are the thing here but it's too frustrating getting snagged in the rocks. For those fishing here in the future I suggest floating, deep diving crankbaits, just to save you the anger of getting snagged every cast with a dropshot.
