Made my first trip of the year to Lake St. Claire. Water temp was between 61 and 64 degrees. Though very scattered, caught 8 bass, with three in the 2 lb range, the rest between 1 and 1 1/2, with one dink. All caught on a weightless Stik-O in 1 to 5 feet of water.

A good day. Sometime I'll make it back to St Clair, only been there once in the '90s. Didn't do very good.

St. Claire is a weirdly built lake to begin with, with its surprisingly deep channels of 50, 60 and 70 feet spreading out here and there, and a main lake that has one spot that is 110 feet deep. The bass fishing can be the same, weird. I've had days where I've caught 20 to 30 bass, and others where i couldn't buy a bite. I've had days where I caught fish all over the main lake, yet couldn't catch a fish back in the fingers, and vise versa. And it does have big bass. I have an 8-7 bass hanging on my wall I caught there back in 1972, and a friend who caught an 8-3 there the year before. About three years ago there was a picture in the Tacoma News Tribune of a gentleman holding a 10 lber caught there. But I do admit, for the most part, seldom do I catch a largemouth over 4 lbs. But I still fish St. Claire at least a half dozen times a year, if for any other reason to have some quiet solitude from the jet and waterskiers during the summer months. By the way, right now there is also a 5 mile an hour speed limit on the main lake, because the lake is very high, with many of the docks partial submerged.

My brother used to fish it quite a bit back in the '80s and did good. I even sold him my first Bass Boat, and he wore it out. But he doesn't even fish anymore. Silly dude. I have a pretty good map of the lake, I should find the map.
