It's been a killer spring so far for walleye fishing in 2014. We've put near 80 walleye in the boat in 4 trips and my most recent trip with Harry Collier of Yakima was the best yet. Harry and I are new found friends and fishing with him was an absolute blast! I caught an eye on my first cast and the fish were biting for the get go. The key for us was finding water that was up to 9 degrees warmer than the main lake . The fast flowing water near the Alder Fill was a chilly 54 degrees but when we headed to the Southern Mont Lake arm we found water temps that wee in the 63 degree range. Harry and I alternated between my 3.5" Sculpin jigs and chartruse tailed 3" grubs tipped with crawlers and put a half dozen walleyes over 20" in the boat by targeting drop off ledges in 7 to 12 feet of water. Between the feisty smallmouth bass and the wally gators, we caught over 50 fish in 7 hours. Can't wait to get back and hit it as the hot bite continues.

How is the walleye population going with so many being caught? Reproduction keeping up with retention?

The population is doing great. I read through the 2013 FWIN put out by the game dept and their net surveys show the walleye numbers have slowly risen in the last three years. There are fewer of the 16 to 24 inch fish, but those years were low spawn years. The lake is full of 12 to 16 inchers and the perch population is also way up so the walleye fishing should be good for a few years. A 19 inch fish is only two years old, so they are growing fast. Having fished that lake my whole life, I have seen the ebb and flows. In 2002, we averaged fish that were 21 inches long. That was a peak year and the fishing steadily declined because those big fish ate up a lot of perch and forage was lean after that year. Prior to that year I caught a lot of perch, and by 2004 I was hardly catching any perch in the lake. Now I am catching lots more perch and more walleye. There just as many fish as ever in the lake right now.
