Late report for 4-26 thru 4-29. Hit the season opener at Blue lake with many family members. Fishing was okay, landed lots of rainbows but much smaller than previous years. Lures that worked best were needlefish, pins minnows, and spinner worm combos. The fish seemed to like 1.8mph the best, which the wind made it tough to maintain at times.

Thought I would go deep on the downrigger with a 4-1/2 purple descent Rapala to see if I could find some larger fish. Caught a couple rainbows the same size we were getting up top. Then we got a bonus in 50 foot of water 40 feet down. Jumbo perch, about 16 inches long and fat! Coughed up a sculpin about 3 inches long in the back of the boat.

Tired of trout at one point during the 4 days, thought I would try for some smallmouth. Trolled in close to the shore so the kids could keep fishing and tossed a 3" pumpkinseed grub off the front of the boat. A few casts in I get a tap, set the hook! Landed about a 2-1/2 lb smallie! Glad I tried that, ended up landing 7 anywhere from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 pounds. Very strong and healthy fish, all returned for someone else to enjoy. By the way, the perch made for some really good dinner!
