Went out for the first kokanee hunt of the year. Opted for a buddies boat since he has a top and heater which was great since there was a cold wind all day. We were the first boat on the water and there was alot of thin ice flows all over the water until about 11. Morning started slow and didn't touch a fish until a 22" 3.6# rainbow absolutely crushed my rod. I passed the rod and boat the first rainbow I have seen in 5 trips to the lake. Finally got into the kokanee around 1230. Already good sized and feisty. The dark pink kokanee fly was the big winner today boating all but 3 of the 15 hooked. Kept only 5 of the bigger ones. Cold and windy and the fish were further towards the public launch than last year.

Thanks for the report, nice fish! How deep did you find the kokanee if I may ask?

Between 35 -50 feet with the majority coming at 35, but that was where i ran the fly that caught most of the kokes. I set down at 50' and it got bit 2 mins later.

if you are heading out there this week I would run smaller bait presentations, like a sling blade and pink fly, or what ever the color of the day is out there. I didn't get touched running any of the standard sized hoochies or any thing with a gang troll in front of it. A couples guys that trolled around us picked up a fish here and there with trolling gear on but not with the consistency we had. Also the corn that seemed to work the best was one I cured with krill powder and UV purple "BadAzz" bait dye. The corn was really firm from the overnight cure and was a black Cherry color. Hope it helps, the fish are gorgeous and the meat is great.

Nice fish! The dodger/wedding ring that was slamming them in winter really isn't working for me anymore even at those same depths.. I've been running rapalas on surface for trout as well with no luck either. Time to switch it up, thanks for the report.

The rainbow came off of a pink/clear apex behind a gang troll with corn heavily scented with krill. I had a 1/2 weight clipped to the riddled back about 125' behind the boat. Probably just got lucky but that fish was a great fighter. Good luck.

Good tip on the corn thanks. I usually soak mine in krill, shrimp, garlic and kokanee scents so I have 4 or 5 varieties for an offer but will try the krill powder and dye.
