Went back to American Lake to try our luck on some SMB and the morning started off just like the last time. A ton of decent and huge RBT to be had we must of caught 20-25 of them. Then around 1130 we finally hooked a SMB it only measured 13 inches but it was a fatty. I'm still on the hunt for a winter SMB but my dad has first. Caught some more Trout and then we left around 2. Caught it on a DS with the hook about 3 feet up and 1/2 oz. weight and a berkley Minnow in Smelt.

Hi Mikeel1987, what were you using to catch all of those rainbows? If you let me know, I'll take care of some of those pesky trout! I tried trolling and fishing bait off of the bottom on Sunday 1/5 and only caught one dink bow, maybe ~6". I'm not familiar with SMB fishing techniques but if they work for rainbows this time of year I will learn. Any incidentally caught SMB will be released!
Thanks!

Try making the 'weight' a 3/4-1oz jighead with a grub on it and move your drop shot offering up to 4'. Sometimes dragging this rig will tell you if the smallies are on the bottom or suspending? Most large bass will suspend 4' off the bottom according to a commercial diver friend of mine... Good job getting out there!! Too many bass fishermen take the Winter off in this State and that's a mistake. Go get em!

jd 39, We were just using a drop shot rig with a 1/2 oz. weight and hook was about 3 feet up from that and used Berkley minnows u can find them at walmart i don't think colors will matter but we used perch smelt and black shad. we were fishing points and humps in about 50 feet of water on the northern end of the lake I hope this helps.
8theb8, Thanks for the tip I'll try that next time out, any colors you prefer on the grubs?
bassman72 and Amx, thanks for the kind words and hope to see you all out there.

No reason to get fancy with the grub colors, brown or green in clear water and you're golden!
