So had my sights on some steelhead fishing Saturday but 2 of my buddies who were going to go had other commitments so thought about hitting the Nisqually. After reading so many negative reports on the fishing conditions decided to take the cover off the Tin Cup and hit either Lake WA or Sammamish and decided on the latter just because I want to learn this fishery some more.

Hit the launch at 10am and was surprised to see so many trailers in the parking lot already so being very excited to get fishing, launched to boat and ran down to the ramp to turn the boat around when I hear that horrible sound of water gurgling! Yes I had forgot to put in the plug! Believe it or not, it is the first time I have done that in all the years of fishing so now I am a member of the club! Quickly jumped into the boat and put the plug in and had to get the boat back on the trailer and drain it! Darn! so finally after all that I was finally fishing around 10:45.

No downriggers today since I was by myself and was excited to try out my new Diawa accudepth line counter reel so put on my usual 1 1/4 ounce lead and a fire tiger needlefish to start the day. Trolled up the East shoreline and not a bump. Saw all the boats circling the weather buoy and all the birds on the surface so headed that way and switched over to a live bait rig with a 3" gulp minnow and made a pass around the buoy. It looked like I got a hit but waited and when nothing happened decided to pull it in and check my minnow. As I am reeling in I get a hard hit and it's fish on! This one's got some weight and is fighting good and as it get's closer see it's about an 19" beautifully colored cutty! He makes a couple runs and just as I get him in the net he vaults out and leave my lure in the net and swims away! Darn but I was planning on only keeping 1 or 2 today anyway so figured good way to practice C&R!

Put out the line again and got a call from JD39 who was out there too and saw me and he had one about 17" so after a few more passes switched to the old faithful Brad's cut plug with herring and no sooner did I get it back 100' then I get a tug tug and fish on! This one is fighting different and as it get's closer looks like a kokanee and does about 4 jumps before coming unhooked at the boat. Had one more drive by and finally about 3pm called it a day but really enjoyed the experience and put my new heater to use as my gloves had gotten wet when putting in the plug so was nice to have the heater going and listen to the football game and enjoy the scenery and company of other great fisherman today!

Hi Barry, Glad you had a fun day out there. It was a beautiful day as it is today as well. I was shocked at the amount of boats out there as well. It's actually nice to see that people were enjoying the nice weather although it was a bit nippy. It sounds like the action you had wasn't much different than my experience either. It was slower than it had been but still ok. I think the real High pressure and cloudless skies had more to do with it than the hatch waning down.

I am in the 16ft white and green center console "Bonito" fishing boat. If I see you, I'll say hi. You be sure to do the same! Glad you had fun. It's a great lake at this time of year!

it's a big lake. They don't all live at the weather buoy. Move around if it's slow.

be aware that the 2014 regs for Lake Sammamish require barbless single hooks 1/1/14 thru 4/30/14
