Went out to Sammamish today and fished with an old friend from work and his buddy. Turns out that my good friend Sean and his buddy were stood up for a guided trip on the Quinalt for Steelhead and were in need to do some fishing somewhere so it was a perfect time for us to get together and for me to try and show he and his buddy what fishing Lake Sammamish can be like.
It was a beautiful day again in the mid 40's and calm. The seagulls were picking away like they have been for almost 2 months now, however, it was apparent that the giant hatch that takes place may be winding down a little. It also could be that the sky was so high etc. that the bite wasn't as great as it had been many times earlier in December.
Anyway, we went out and trolled to the East and North of the Weather buoy and also to the North West of the buoy and followed the gulls around. We caught a total of 6 trout in almost 3 hours of trolling around. the largest one was 171/2 inches and a colorful buc. We kept a total of 3 fish between us for a meal and let the others go.
We then went to the North end of the lake to the East and North of Idylwood park and tried trolling there at the end of the day and didn't find any biters or seagulls. Overall, it was a great day sharing fish stories and talking about old times with my friends. It was a nice day to be fishing and glad to at least get them on some fish after being disappointed miserably by an irresponsible steelhead guide on the Quinalt.
Statistics - We fished Needlefish (brown trout color) off the downrigger at 15-25 ft deep and 90 feet behind the boat no dodger was used and the speed was 1.5 - 2.0 mph. Sunday is supposed to be a pretty day as well. I suspect there will be some people fishing! Enjoy and be responsible!
