Vampire hunting in Pierce County on Clear Lake leads to a double then nothing on a rainy, foggy morning.

Kokanee Kid and I have fished Clear Lake the last 2 years on Halloween looking for the spawning kokanee which he calls vampires. This year I could not make it work because of work so we went before I had to work on the 27th of Oct.
We met at the boat launch between 8-8:30am and started trolling down the north side of the lake going east. KK had a bite with fish on fairly fast but lost it. He was using a Bahama Mama dodger and I am not sure what else. Trolling a while longer lead to nada. So KK had us pull up and we tried to find fish with the Hummingbird fish finder he has. Not many fish to see.
I remarked that we can not catch fish without our lines being in the water. Therefore we trolled to the south side going west. Even when he saw fish on the finder they did not bite. I had also taken the temperature of the lake and it was 54 at 27 feet down
It was getting close to 10 so I thought we should go over toward the launch and KK said that he had spot over there that he had caught fish before. We headed that way. Now we had switched up our rigs a few times and I, for a last resort put on a Dick Nite Chartreuse hot head dodger with a Bloody Mary and then I was long lining a Z-ray spoon without any weight.
KK said “Hey we haven’t tried a cell phone bite. “Call Kokanee_Slayer. Tell him that he caught all the fish ‘cause there aren’t any here.” As I was talking on the cell, KK was yelling about all the fish he saw on the finder. I think it was in 50 feet of water with the fish between 16 and 32 feet. Then I look and my rod that I was long lining on the surface was dancing. I got excited and said I had a fish and I meant to put speaker phone on but I ended the call. I brought in what I thought was going to be a trout but it was a colored up kokanee buck. Got the picture taken and put the line with the spoon back in and brought my downrigger up to 10 feet. I see a fish jump and say “that fish was red!” Kokanee kid pulls his downrigger up until he can see the clip. Then KK calls Kokanee_Slayer back and puts him back on speaker phone and gets his first fish. Two cell phone bites. Thanks Kokanee_Slayer.
We got back to the spot and try again and we get a double on and in, both on the downriggers. We repeat the process and ...they are gone. Nothing on the fish finder, nothing jumping. Nothing. Double, then nothing. We couldn’t find them and I had to leave to get ready for work. Nice wrap up of the 2013 season at 11am!

Great report Toni! I have had many of those cell phone bites! Sometimes we resort to that when it's slow and have people call us ( usually don't have to worry about that too much as my phone is always ringing! haha!) Those fish are real looking vampires for sure!
