Arrived at Tapps at 7 am. Dense fog on the water. For that reason I fished the ridge and pocket directly in front of the boat launch. Caught five there. Nothing big. Once the fog began to lift motored over to Driftwood Point. Caught five there, including a couple in the over 2 lb range. Then went to Golf Ball Point. Caught another seven there. The very first bite was a pig! Before being seen, its pull was so heavy and dogged I thought for sure I had a muskie. Finally it came to the top and jumped, totally clearing the water. It was a big smallmouth. It then did a slow swim right by the boat and then simply came unbuttoned, and slowly swam into the depths. Right up until then I was thinking, "Of all days to leave my camera home." Then I remembered I had my cell pho....Woops. No need to worry about that. Though I have yet to catch a 5 lb plus smallie, I have caught several 4's. But I have yet to get a 4 lber from Tapps, and this one looked every bit of 4 lbs. Of course, don't they all when lost. Was off the water by noon. All fish were caught in 21 to 27 feet of water, the latter being the depth I hooked the big one. All caught on a Carolina rig with a curly tailed grub and a dropshot with a small swimbait.
