Fishing is still slow at Cda Lake and the chains, at least for me it was.
Two of us fished from 6:30am till 7:30pm and only managed 7 pike with the largest being a nice 31"er. We got them on spinnerbaits and spoons. Best bait was a 1oz spinner bait with an orange blade. They were all hanging in about 7 feet of water and hit just off the weedlines. Water temps are coming down nicely. I saw 69-74 degrees and expected faster action for the day but it never really took off. We did find 3 of the seven pike within about a half hour time period late in the day to turn things around. The fish were hiding under the pads in the shade.
I took a friend along and got to see him catch his first ever pike. I think he has found a new favorite fish.
I also released 3 nice bass. 2 largies that went 3lbs and 5 1/2 lbs, and a nice fat 2 1/2 lb smallie. Not a bad day overall. I anticipate the fall pike bite will begin soon with the falling water temps. There are still tons of fry swimming around giving these fish plenty to eat right now. I think that is keeping the bellies of those fish 25" and under pretty full. Those are the ones that bring a guys numbers up for the day. Once the water cools a little more I think we will see the larger fish move back into the shallower water and the real fun will begin.
