Once spawn is over most of the smallmouth move off into deeper water where they school up on the sides of steep drops off points and humps. It doesn't have to be an expensive one, just as long as it gives you the depth. Yesterday, for the most part, the smallies were holding in 21 to 24 feet of water. Any shallower or any deeper and bites were scarce. I know. I tried. After finding the right depth on sharp drops of the bottom, just slowly drag the bait at that depth, making certain the bait is always in contact with the bottom. It doesn't get much simpler than that.
