A day of firsts for the Fiancee and I! First time targeting catfish, first time fishing this lake, first catfish caught! Got on the lake around 6:30AM. Started fishing with a worm under a bobber just to see what was active. Saw HUGE fish (cats, I think) jumping everywhere. Got some nibbles but didn't hook anything.
Switched to catfish bait under the bobber assuming since the cats were jumping they were near the surface. Nothing. Catfish bait on the bottom. Nothing.
It was around 9:30 when I said screw it, let's try for trout. Switched to a worm floated off the bottom by an orange garlic marshmallow on a 6-foot leader. 15 minutes later, FISH ON! I could tell right away by the fight I had a catfish. Got him to the dock and the Old Lady netted him for me. BONK! On the scale - 2.75lbs! Checked my knot, re-baited, 30 minutes later another one, 3lbs even this time.
By this time my lady switched to my rig & bait, and sure as shootin' she hooked one! Got him 3/4 of the way in and he got a lucky head-shake and spit the hook. =(
10 minutes later, #3 for me. 3.25lbs! 20 minutes after that I hooked another, got him within sight of the dock, and he took me right to a snag on the bottom. Had to snap my line. By this time the sun was getting pretty hot, so we packed it in with 3 nice channel cats! 6 nice fillets and 6 nice neck-nuggets for tomorrow night's fish-fry...
