I hit the lake at about 10 am. The day started off clear and sunny, temp was about 75. The water temp was 77 - 79 all day. I put in at the public access and went north to a little island with a cove behind it. I spent a good deal of time in and around the cove and island. The first few bass I caught were about 4 inches long. Then I caught a berbot, which was surprising, on a small green leech. I caught many small large mouth, about 4 - 6 inches. In the afternoon I finally got a keeper, about 14 - 16 oz. Then the real surprise, I landed a Bluegill that was 9 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. I stayed to try and get enough for dinner but was only able to get 1 more that was about 1/2 the size of the first. I ended up letting them all go. I used everything that I could think of for bass, tubes, spinners, cranks, and just a worm on a hook with no weight. The worm seemed to be the best. Maybe in a few years this lake will be a good bass fishery, IF THE STATE LEAVES IT ALONE.

The State will never leave Sprague alone! They think it is a place to raise trout. It does grow some huge trout that eat snails and taste like MUD. I've caught some beauties at different times of the year; the only time they are remotely edible is in the late fall/early winter just before ice up.

The lake should be definitely left alone as a self sustaining spiny ray fishery; think of the money that the WDFW could save and use elsewhere like boat launch docks so us old gezers can get in the boat!

Congrats, you are the first to catch a bluegill out of Sprague since the rehab. Too have caught two is quite an accomplishment!

Sounds like the Bass had a great spawn, perhaps in a few years, if the Gills and Crappie get a foot hold........

You did not catch a berbot, or burbot. What you caught was a Sculpin, most likely a mottled Sculpin. They are native and did not get killed out during the rehab. They are an important source of food for the Bass, large Trout, etc.

Thanks for the report, it is good to see someone else out fishing for and reporting on the Spinney rays at Sprague other then myself.
