I fished every morning around Blacks Beach resort from a pontoon for LMB & Tigers catching atleast 10 LMB with each outing, the largest I caught was on Friday the 5th. It was 20" and probaby 4.5 lbs. The Tiger muskie was a whopping 26", but he was big enough to do some damage to my Evolve species frog. Topwater seemed to be the key for big bass all week, Evolve Species Frog (Natural greens), Spro Frog (Firetiger) & Savage Gear Prey lure (Black). I caught a large number of smaller fish using a drop shot with 4" Nojo worms or Powerteam Tickler Green/Chartruese worms and a few others using some weighted wacky rig hooks.
I spotted several 3'+ muskie around the Blacks Beach docks on multiple days, I was unable to get them to bite.
I didn't fish anywhere else as the family boat was being used for watersports or trolling. Either way, a great week of bass action. My father and mother trolled for trout several days and usually limited, one thing to note is that 2 of the largest trout they caught were infested with some type of clear roundworm. I'd never seen that before.
That is a good looking bass for Curlew. We hardly ever catch any bass over 10" when we go. I got my wife hooked on bass fishing with quality over quality on Curlew. Top water poppers in the AM with ultra lite rods make for good time here.
The last few years seem to have really improved the bass size. I caught a lot in the 3lb range, a few in the 4 and a 5lber last year. Also there is a picture of a 9lb bass in the office at Blacks Beach that says it was caught in 2011. There are definitely spots on the lake where you can catch 6-10" bass all day.
Also, the pic isn't the 4lber. I think it was just the first fish I caught whatever day that was, I didn't take many pictures because I was paranoid about sending my phone to the bottom of the lake.
I have fished that great lake several times in the past. Caught lots of bass but nothing over about 14 inches. My biggest bass came from lake Roberta located on the south end of Curlew and reachable via a canal.
I've been going to Curlew since I was a kid and I always loved fishing for bass but I didn't think the lake even had anything over 12" but you could catch them all day, I also never knew there were small mouth in there either. Either the fishery itself has improved (Tiger Muskie?) or my techniques are improving or maybe a little luck.
I'm familiar with Roberta, I used to fish the submerged log just as you come into Roberta- it used to hold some massive squaw fish. They were fun to catch but I haven't seen a pikeminnow in few years.
